Cinco de Celebration
America has long been a melting pot of cultural traditions and customs. One of our more recently adopted celebrations centers around Cinco de Mayo, the Mexican observance of a victorious battle during Mexico’s war with France. Whether you know the history and celebrate authentically or add an American twist to the Mexican traditions, this holiday has become a fun excuse to party on May 5th.
Last year we showed you how to Rock Your Cinco de Mayo Party with lots of fun decorating tips and party ideas. This year, we want to up the ante with inspired dishes and delicious drinks that’ll have your guests raising their glasses to toast the host. ¡salud!
KEEP THE PARTY MOVING
With the weather warming up, a slow-paced sit-down dinner isn’t necessarily what you need to get the party started. Instead, encourage mingling and a go-with-the-flow vibe by setting up a DIY taco bar and buffet. This way, guests can graze as they gab.
TAKE ON THE TACO BAR. Make sure you have all the ingredients your guests need to make their tacos exactly how they like them. Offer both hard shells and soft tortillas, as well as a few different kinds of meat like chicken, pork carnitas, barbacoa and ground beef or turkey. And, of course, no taco bar would be complete without fixin’s like beans and rice, cheese, sour cream, sliced olives, onions and hot peppers, and our addictive FIESTA GUACAMOLE SALSA.
SPICE UP YOUR SALAD. A green salad is an easy go-to option, but our fresh and colorful MEXICAN CORN AND BLACK BEAN SALAD will liven up plates and palates. You can make it ahead of time, then store and serve in a dish from the PYREX® NO-LEAK LIDS™ STORAGE SET. Simply choose the size that best fits your party.
HINT: Store your fixings in dishes from the PYREX® STORAGE PLUS™ 6-PC SET. Not only do they stack easily for tidy, space-saving storage, but you can simply pop off the lids and serve everything straight from the fridge.
RAISE YOUR (PYREX) GLASS
¡Felicidades! Raise your glass to good times, good food and good company. Time to take it all in and toast!
TIP A BIT OF TEQUILA. You can’t go wrong serving a classic margarita, but why not add a little American flavor to this fiesta favorite? Check out this fun Cinco de Mayo Jello shot recipe from Brit + Co.
SIP ON SANGRIA. Tequila packs quite a punch, so it’s a good idea to serve something a little more mellow as well. A refreshing mix of wine and fresh fruit, sangria is an ideal springtime sipper. Serve up your favorite recipe, or try this Fresh Strawberry Sangria from The Kitchen is My Playground.
- Use PYREX MEASURING CUPS for mixing drinks. The easy-to-read measurements and sturdy handle are ideal for measuring, mixing and pouring.
- Get crafty with the kids and involve them in making the decorations or making maracas. You can even use the time to explain the history of the holiday to them.
- Need dessert ideas? Whip up these PATRIOTIC DIPPED STRAWBERRIES and pay tribute to the Mexican flag by simply swapping in green for the blue.
However you celebrate Cinco de Mayo, you can’t go wrong with fresh food, vibrant colors and a festive atmosphere that captures the excitement and freedom of the holiday.
