Vitrelle® Makes Dinnerware Lightweight, Chip-Resistant
Savvy consumers know Corelle® dinnerware is not only iconic, it’s also trusted as a smart choice for their table – it’s durable, chip- and break-resistant, dishwasher-safe and impervious to scratches and stains. It’s also lightweight and thinner than typical ceramic plates—when stacked, Corelle takes up less space in cabinets than conventional ceramic plates and bowls.
But what makes Corelle truly special is the innovative technology imbedded in each piece of dinnerware and bakeware. It’s a unique glass called Vitrelle® and it’s made with a proprietary mix of raw materials (including recycled Vitrelle, for you eco-conscious consumers). The special glass enables us to make versatile Corelle dinnerware as thin and translucent as fine china, yet dramatically stronger.
Developed decades ago and first intended for television screens in the 1940s, Vitrelle differs from regular glass because it’s not porous or fragile. Now, we admit that durable glass may seem like contradictory terminology—glass breaks pretty easily, right? But the concept makes more sense after you understand the essential basics of Corelle dinnerware’s unique composition of three heat-strengthened layers. More specifically, we make Vitrelle by laminating a top and bottom layer of clear skin glass to a core center layer, which creates dinnerware that’s lightweight but strong, thin but nonporous.
We started to make high-quality Corelle dinnerware out of Vitrelle in the 1970s. Today, Corelle is America’s most recognized brand of dinnerware, found in an estimated 50 percent of homes nationwide, and even sold in over 40 countries across the globe. But even though it’s a well-established brand, we’re not finished innovating—not by a long shot.
In 2005, in response to consumer demand, we came out with square-shaped Corelle dinnerware, changing our iconic round coupe plate shape for the first time in 35 years. In 2008, we introduced Corelle bakeware, which makes life easier for kitchen cooks because it weighs half as much as traditional ceramic baking dishes, yet remains stronger and more durable. Lifting dishes into or out of a dishwasher or cabinet doesn’t get any easier!
In 2013, we brought another brand innovation to market: the sophisticated Boutique™ by Corelle® collection of embossed, white-on-white dinnerware. Available in our round Swept and square Cherish patterns, these innovative styles put a contemporary twist on our time-tested technology. It’s yet another example of how we continue to delight consumers by revitalizing Vitrelle in new and exciting ways.
